Welcome Back, Scarves

I wore a scarf today.

I know it shouldn’t be that groundbreaking, but the thing is, I can’t remember the last time I wore one. Maybe a snow day? Besides that, in day-to-day life, scarves haven’t been an essential part of my fall/winter wardrobe, even though they really are quite practical and I can bet the majority of people, especially New Yorkers, wear them often in the colder months.

The scarf that broke this unintentional hiatus was a thrifted find, as many of my clothes are. I bought it months ago when scarves were still dusty in the backs of our closets or stuffed in a bin with the rest of our sweaters and long sleeves. It was vintage Gap, from the blissful era of their signature rainbow stripe – an era that actually inspired one of my favorite Vogue articles from one of my favorite writers, Liana Satenstein. It had the same rainbow stripe, was the perfect length and was a thick knit material. I don’t know what possessed me, but I claimed it, and it’s been waiting many months until it finally, today, got it’s debut.

I had been waiting for my super to come by my apartment (broken toilet troubles, debatably the worst apartment troubles you can have), and had to quickly get to work once everything was sorted. I wanted to be cozy, so I wore black yoga pants and a graphic tee with the best Peanuts character on it (Lucy – she was ahead of her time) and a brown cardigan layered under my favorite new fall jacket from Uniqlo. It was missing something. It was missing color. It was missing the scarf.

Once I put it on, the outfit was complete. And now I’m online shopping for scarves, and wanted to share my findings with you. These are just ones for neck warming – I could write a whole separate story if we wanted to get into head scarves and bag scarves and all the ways they really are one of the best accessories. But until then, here are five scarves that caught my eye for this fall.

  1. The CashSoft Rib Scarf from Gap in Happy Stripe – This is the closest to my beloved Gap scarf, in both colorway and material. It really is the best, and because it’s so colorful it kind of goes with everything. There’s lots of neutral tones in New York, so I like to add something to brighten up a more basic look.

  2. The Faux Curly Lamb Fur Long Scarf from Anna Sui – Although on the pricier side, this scarf is good. It radiates main character in a Disney Channel Original Movie energy, which is honestly the energy I want to give on a daily basis. It also comes in brown!

  3. Choosing Optimism Blanket Scarf from Free People – Blanket and scarf combo is something I’m personally very excited about. This scarf comes in two different colors/patterns and is exactly what it sounds like: a really big scarf that feels like a blanket around your neck.

  4. Emil Skinny Scarf from Apparis in Orchid – I love a skinny scarf! The only skinny scarf I have is definitely not great for cold temps, but this knit one from Apparis would definitely do the trick. The softer, more muted pink color is perfect for winter months, but a still fun pick.

  5. Wander Agio Winter Warm Scarf from Amazon – Had to include an Amazon pick as a cheaper option! I can’t promise it'll last you through multiple seasons of scarf wearing, but it has good reviews and comes in multiple color options, with different pairings depending on if you gravitate more to earth tones or more bright and poppy.

Let’s get into scarves together, especially those of us living in places that are already getting a big drop in temperatures. No cold necks this winter!
