I’m sure we can all agree here that fashion is an art. From the textiles, to construction, to the way the consumer styles it. Every aspect of the fashion cycle is fascinating, even a product’s decline. And that’s where thrifting comes in. A certain piece might have overstayed it’s welcome in one person’s closet, thus landing it on the rack at the goodwill to become another person’s treasure! Thrifting has always been a thing, but the resurgence over the past couple of years has been ever present. Even research shows that it’s only going to keep rising in popularity (especially if the economy keeps doing its thing). If you ask me, the true art form of thrifting is the actual dig. Some people are born for it, while others simply cannot fathom the hunt. For me, it’s quite possibly in my top 3 things I do best, so why not share my tips and tricks!
Now, these tidbits are not profound in any way, but are what helps me..
#1 And the most important.. DO NOT go in a rush. You need all the time possible to comb through and really dig with ease and an open mind. Go through every section because you never know what you can find!
#2 Don’t go in looking for anything super specific. You can have an idea or some items to look for, but don’t discriminate any rack. Let the thrift tell you what you need.
#3 Know what’s trending and what brands to look for! Let’s deep dive into this.. shall we?
As you probably guessed it, fall is the best time to thrift and the best season to dress for, if you ask me. Jackets and sweaters are way better when they’re at least 30 years old, right? Granted, there are some fall trends that are different year to year, but there are always a few staples you can rely on— suede, leather, fur, certain colors ie brown, Burgundy, shades of greens, etc. Here are some particular trends to look for this season:
Barn coats! Particularly LL Bean, but we do not discriminate against a Land’s End situation or some other brands. Mainly look for the oversized & worn-in fit, cargo style pockets, and the corduroy collar is a must.
Rugby tops- any and all brands. I would go for either an oversized fit or a boxy cropped fit! Our gal Mrs. Bieber really put these on the map with her viral rugby shirt/mini skirt/loafers outfit (pictured below).
Trench coats! Some of my favorite thrift finds are coats. Good trench coat brands to look for: London Fog 1000/10, Liz Claiborne, Ann Taylor, and of course.. the holy grail.. Burberry! If you ever find a Burberry trench at the goodwill, consider that YOUR. LUCKY. DAY.
** Bonus points for a suede trench if you’re really trying to be that girl this fall!
